Queensland Men’s Country Week Wrap Up Over 150 teed up at the annual Queensland Men’s Country Week in August with many returning every year to take on the challenge. A massive thank you is extended to all four hosts (McLeod, Oxley, Indooroopilly and Redcliffe) for the fantastic manner in which their courses were presented and the hospitality extended to the Country participants. Players are already booking their 2016 trip! The week would not be the same without the sponsors, and City Golf Club and Motel are to be congratulated and applauded for their continued support of country golf. They do a wonderful job promoting country golf, as well as supporting the annual Sand Green Championships. Here’s a wrap up on how the week unfolded. STROKE Scott Warren (Gin Gin) has won the stroke event of Queensland Men’s Country Week at McLeod and Oxley Golf Club’s. Warren fired a 1-under par round 71 at McLeod to hold the joint lead with Matt Lejeune (Gatton) and Grant Rasmussen (City). Warren was able to continue his good scoring from the first round to return a second round four-under par-68 in perfect conditions at Oxley, and enough to claim this year’s event by two shots. This was a role reversal from last year’s event as the 2014 champion Adam Gemmell (Ipswich) finished runner-up after firing a consistent second round three under par-69. FOURSOMES A blustery Indooroopilly Golf Club hosted the Foursomes section with 56 pairings vying for their Divisional Titles. 6 Q Golf Spring 2015 www.golfqueensland.org.au Division 1 was won by Marty Manning (Ipswich) and Ben Daniels (Sandy Gallop), who, despite having a double and a triple bogey in the opening 4 holes, closed with a 78 to claim a 2 shot victory. Finishing second on count back were Toowoomba’s Chris Webster and Jason McWilliam. Ryan Slack and Jeremy Zahl (Gayndah) returned a fine 70.5 to win the Nett section from Chinchilla’s Glen Gray and Deon Hunt (74.5). Scoring was tough however Richard Marschke’s (Toogoolawah) and Robert Yeo’s (Laidley) gross score of 92 was enough for a 3 shot victory over Country Week stalwarts John Smith (Craignish) and Michael Treay (Blackwater). Division 2 Nett winners were perennial contenders, Chris Bath (Rosewood) and Barry Thoms (Ipswich), with a great score of 68. A distant 8.5 shots behind in second was the Biggenden pairing of Ivan Groves and Brett Flanders. FOURBALL Blessed with yet another beautiful Queensland winter day, players headed to Redcliffe for the final day of Country Week, the Fourball Championship. The leader board was tight all morning with many scores around the 40-43 point regions. With only a few groups remaining on course, Tod Mathews (Capricorn) and Clay Jacobson (Maroochy River) (pictured) signed for 44 points and an eventual 1 point win. Jacobson would go on to describe that the all-important point was secured with Mathews holing a 4 foot downhill putt on the last… with his eyes on his partner rather than the ball! Finishing runners up on count back were Ryan Slack and Brent Chambers from Gayndah, on 43 points, with third place taken out by Peter Griffin (Maroochy River) and Shane Eastell (Sandy Gallop).
