Golf Queensland Congratulates Jason Day
Golf Queensland chairman Peter Castrisos saluted Jason
Day as a “superb golfer and tremendous role model”
after the Queenslander’s inspirational victory in the US
PGA Championship.
“It is very positive for the sport to have a number of
our emerging players performing at the highest level.
Cameron Smith is another young Queenslander with
a great future.’’
Day, a member of state junior and senior teams during
his amateur days, joined Greg Norman, Wayne Grady,
Ian Baker-Finch and Adam Scott as Queenslanders to
have won major championships.
Smith, who has just turned 21, finished fourth at this
year’s US Open and earned a start in the 2016
US Masters.
“It makes us very proud that a player who came through
our junior and senior ranks can move on to the world
stage and achieve the highest honours,’’
said Mr Castrisos.
“Jason’s victory was inspirational for all of us at Golf
Queensland and very satisfying to our coaches and highperformance managers. He always set a good example
and is a tremendous role model for juniors, indeed
all golfers.
Day debuted for the Queensland senior amateur
team as a 17-year old in 2004 and played again the
following year when he was also leading amateur
at the Queensland Open Championship. He turned
professional in 2006.
A teammate in the 2004 and 2005 Queensland
teams was Andrew Dodt, winner of last year’s Isuzu
Queensland Open who also won on the European PGA
Tour this year.
