RALIA’S LEADING PLAYERS education sessions with respected sports educators involved. “From a coach’s perspective it was great,’’ said Meyer. “We had two full days of coach education.’’ Ex-Tour player Neale Smith, a sports psychologist who has worked with Jason Day, and Rick Aberman, sports psychologist to the Minnesota Twins major league baseball squad and the Minnesota Vikings were involved with “coaching the coaches”. Others included Jim Leitz, Joseph Mayo, Matt French, Argentine head coach Santigo Garat and New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe. “The national camp offers players in the national squad the chance to take a pulse on their games and spend time with some of the best coaches in golf,’’ said Golf Australia’s high performance director Brad James. Meyer, 34, utilised his time in the US to full advantage. He attended the Callaway World Junior in San Diego and met Stanford University golf coach Conrad Ray on site at the famous college. “Conrad played on the same Stanford team as Tiger Woods and it was a good opportunity to look at the system Viraat (Badhwar) is going into,’’ said Meyer. “It was also an opportunity to speak to Conrad about our setup in Queensland and talk about some of the emerging players.’’ Badhwar, who became the youngest player to win the Australian Master of the Amateurs title at Royal Melbourne earlier this year, came to Australia from India six years ago and is a graduate of the Kelvin Grove School of Excellence. Golf Australia conducts a minimum of three national camps each year at various venues in addition to Moonah Links on the Mornington Peninsula and The Woodlands in Houston, Texas. www.golfqueensland.org.au | Q Golf Online Spring 2013 9
