US GOLF CAMP FOR AUSTR
By Bernie Pramberg
Golf Queensland’s head coach Tony Meyer
believes time spent at Golf Australia’s
National Camp in Texas in the countdown
to the US Amateur Champion contributed
to the strong showing of Oliver Goss.
Goss, 19, earned starts in the 2014
US Masters and US Open by reaching
the final of the Amateur at Brookline,
Massachusetts, where he was defeated 5
& 4 by England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick.
“Oliver was struggling with his game when
he came into the camp,’’ said Meyer. “His
schedule in the preceding three months
had been demanding and spending
time in Houston got him right for the US
Amateur where he played great golf.’’
West Australian Goss was among 20
elite young Australian golfers, including
Queenslanders Taylor Macdonald, Viraat
Badhwar, Aaron Wilkin and Sam Daley,
who attended the all-encompassing camp
at The Woodlands, Houston, in late July.
Macdonald and Badhwar, who has taken
up a scholarship at Stanford University,
will have another chance to earn a
dream invitation to the Masters and US
Open when they contest the Asia-Pacific
Amateur Championship in China
in October.

Meyer, who also doubles as Queensland
national coach, has been present at all
three Golf Australia annual camps held
in Texas.
“The Woodlands Resort facility is
excellent with accommodation on site,’’
he said. “And the timing is right as many
of our best players are already in the US
playing their major amateur events.
“Although about 20 players were involved
with the camp there was never more than
12 there at any one time.’’
The duration of the camp varies, but is
usually around 10 days. This year the
program expanded to include coach
