US GOLF CAMP FOR AUSTR By Bernie Pramberg Golf Queensland’s head coach Tony Meyer believes time spent at Golf Australia’s National Camp in Texas in the countdown to the US Amateur Champion contributed to the strong showing of Oliver Goss. Goss, 19, earned starts in the 2014 US Masters and US Open by reaching the final of the Amateur at Brookline, Massachusetts, where he was defeated 5 & 4 by England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick. “Oliver was struggling with his game when he came into the camp,’’ said Meyer. “His schedule in the preceding three months had been demanding and spending time in Houston got him right for the US Amateur where he played great golf.’’ West Australian Goss was among 20 elite young Australian golfers, including Queenslanders Taylor Macdonald, Viraat Badhwar, Aaron Wilkin and Sam Daley, who attended the all-encompassing camp at The Woodlands, Houston, in late July. Macdonald and Badhwar, who has taken up a scholarship at Stanford University, will have another chance to earn a dream invitation to the Masters and US Open when they contest the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in China in October. 8 Q Golf Online Spring 2013 | www.golfqueensland.org.au Meyer, who also doubles as Queensland national coach, has been present at all three Golf Australia annual camps held in Texas. “The Woodlands Resort facility is excellent with accommodation on site,’’ he said. “And the timing is right as many of our best players are already in the US playing their major amateur events. “Although about 20 players were involved with the camp there was never more than 12 there at any one time.’’ The duration of the camp varies, but is usually around 10 days.
