Sue Smith
The Academy notes with sorrow this year’s
passing of long-time faculty member Sue Smith.
A lover of the English language and literature, she
supported many creative and engaged efforts in
the classroom and in the arts program.
Her daughter, Susannah Smith White ’94, writes:
“When I think of the impact my mother had in
her field as an educator, I envision her joyfully,
carefully, and passionately gardening her students
in the ways that they should grow.”
From Headmaster Emeritus Richard Anderson:
“Sue Smith was a founding faculty member at
Christ Presbyterian Academy. When CPA opened
in 1985, Sue was the original teacher of sixth
grade—the class which went on to become the first
graduating seniors in 1992.
Mostly, Sue loved Jesus and the Word. She will
be remembered at CPA for her unique sense of
style and color. . .for her spiritual depth. . .for
her wonderful sense of humor. . .and for the
mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
Soli Deo Gloria for the life of Sue Smith.”
Sue Karyl Hardie Smith taught at CPA from 1985
through the 2009-10 school-year and continued
teaching Literature and Creative Writing at
Columbia State Community. College until retiring
in 2012.
David Finney
The Academy also notes with sorrow this year’s
passing of David Finney, graduate of the Class
of 1999.
