The current legislation allows EU citizens to live in the United Kingdom as jobseekers, therefore allowing them to apply for Job Seekers Allowance and other benefits. Under Mr Cameron’ s plans, a statutory presumption will be created to ensure that after 6 months an EEA national can no longer retain their status as a job seeker or retained worker and continue to claim benefits, unless they can demonstrate they have actively sought work throughout that period and have a genuine chance of finding work. Some changes are also likely to affect the health system, as the government wants to curb the so called“ health tourism”.
