W e often hear both consumers and business owners ask: What’s the next big thing? While it’s such a broad question and no one can truly predict the future with certainty, the answer may lie in the current trends we are seeing today. If anything, today’s trends could also be an indicator of tomorrow’s big ideas, providing businesses a sneak peek of consumers’ behaviors, habits and preferences that may carry on in years to come. Here’s a look at what’s on the brink today that may ultimately affect your spa business tomorrow. Trend: Slow and Sustainable Gone are the days of fast fixes at all costs. Like their food and lifestyle habits, today’s spa-goers embrace more natural and sustainable methods of maintaining their health and wellness. While organic ingredients have been included in spa-goers’ sustainable skincare routines for some time, suppliers are taking it one step further by offering biodynamic products, including Eminence, which has released a full line of Demeter-certified Biodynamic facial products. “With more and more consumers looking for higher and higher levels of purity in organic products, biodynamic is the natural next step,” says Boldijarre Koronczay, president and founder of Eminence Organic Skin Care. “This is actually an old-world farming philosophy; one that returns to a holistic view of the land and how we harvest fruits, vegetables and herbs. It’s exciting that the movement is not only pure and healthy, but sustainable as well.” Eminence’s products are handmade in Hungary from its own and other small biodynamic farms. To receive Demeter certification, each step of the product’s production process—from planting and harvesting through processing, bottling and labeling—is inspected. “Each product has to be certified organic first; then biodynamic,” says Koronczay. “Consumers are becoming more and more educated about the chemicals they are exposed to and realizing that the same, if not, better results can be achieved using the right organic products. I think this goes along with the return to more sustainable approaches to beauty.” June 2012 n PULSE 27
