Wellness Shift
A Look at How Spas Can Keep Up with Change
By Anna Bjurstam
Much of today’s research points to a spa industry that is in the midst of
change. We are seeing more and more spas adding “wellness” to their names, paving the
way to a “spa and wellness” merger.
But it’s not only in the spa industry that we see the “wellness shift.” For one, data from the
Global Spa & Wellness Summit’s May 2010 report called Spas and the Global Wellness Market:
Synergies and Opportunities, shows direct market interactions with three wellness sectors (i.e.
Fitness, Beauty & Anti-Aging, and Healthy Eating/Nutrition & Weight Loss) with the core spa
industry. According to the report, all these sectors are part of “The Wellness Cluster” (see graph).
