“Beauty directs us to keep life living
forward. We protect what we fall in
love with; therefore, we are hardwired to
keep our DNA moving forward.”
P: What started your love affair with time-lapse
photography?
S: Two things: 1) the sense of wonder with the technique
and, 2) not having enough money [then] to shoot real-time
film.
P: Of all the films you’ve produced, which story left
the biggest impact on you?
S: The story of pollination—a love story that feeds the earth.
It taught me that pollination is the foundation for all life. In
nature, there is an intricately choreographed dance between
flowers and the pollinating creatures that need the flower’s
nourishment to continue their species’ DNA. Reproduction,

the symbiotic relationship that evolved over millions of years.
P: You once said: “Unless you move people emotionally, there won’t be the shift in consciousness we need
to solve our problems.” Which of today’s problems,
you think, need to be addressed the most?
S: Our most important mission is creating a sustainable future
that comes about by protecting the environment. There is so
much today that needs our care: freedom, art, culture, health,
indigenous knowledge, education and social justice. But
without a world that works, none of these other things can
be preserved. That is why I want to help people feel gratitude
