Politics: Trains are on strike in Sydney during the Australia Day long weekend as the government disputes the union's claims to higher wages. The strike is causing chaos across Australia's largest city.

Economics: Australia is on target to accomplish its Renewable Energy Target before the estimated date of 2020 after large amounts of capital investment in renewable energy recently.

Culture: Once again debate rages over Australia Day, a national holiday that marks the arrival of the First Fleet. Indigenous Australians refer to the day as Invasion Day.
