Steven and Rhiannon Begley ’ s first day selling their huge , delicious hot potatoes was August 30 , 2023 , and it was at Don Franklin Chrysler dealership , where Steven had worked for about six years prior .
“ It was kind of nostalgic ,” Rhiannon said of their decision to have their first food truck event at Don Franklin ’ s dealership . Why nostalgic ? Because it was at Don Franklin Chrysler dealership that they met just a few years earlier while he was working there , before they ended up getting together and eventually going into the food truck business . She came to the dealership as a customer having car difficulties with her old car . However , Steven didn ’ t make the sale at first . “ She actually bought off someone else ,” Steven laughed , explaining that Rhiannon ended up buying a car off a different sales person .
But as fate would have it , Steven didn ’ t give up , and he eventually got the girl , if not the car sale .
After being together for a while , they decided to go into some kind of business together but not without some hesitation .
“ He wanted to own a business , I did not want any part of owning a business ,” said Rhiannon . “ But I love to cook , and I ’ m passionate about that , and I love peopleing ,” she continued .
The arrangement evolved so that Steven focused on the business aspects of Deez Spudz , while Rhiannon focused on the food design and preparation aspects .
In the interest of having a unique approach with a unique product , the pair did their research and ultimately decided to go with a potato truck .
“ We would be the closest within an hour-and-a-half drive ,” she said .
They said they were both surprised at how far the whole thing would go in such a short time in terms of their success .
“ I knew it would be good , because everyone loves potatoes ,” said Rhiannon , “ but I never guessed in a million years the demand would be like this .”
She said they ’ ve even gotten requests from as far aways as Florida .
“ It ’ s been wild how widely we ’ ve been accepted ,” said Steven , with people encouraging them to expand into catering as well as a brick and mortar restaurant .
However , due to their concern about maintaining top quality in their product , they have decided to stick with their food truck for now .
If they were to expand their business , it would most likely end up being a brick and mortar somewhere down the road a bit .
All their product is cooked on-site in their truck , and they like it that way , so as to maintain it fresh and hot . They also insist that every single potato sold is at least 12 ounces at a minimum .
