PRINTING PLATES & CMYK COLORS The next phase in the Pre-Press process is outputting your files through a process called RIP ( Raster Image Processing ), during this process your files are separated into four colors & output onto four thin metal printing plates - one plate for each of the colors , cyan , magenta , yellow & black ( CMYK ).

Printing plates are custom for each job and provide the method for transferring the ink to the proper place on the paper . These thin metal plates are sturdy enough to be used for thousands of printing impressions , yet also flexible enough to wrap around a rotating cylinder inside the printing press .
