The Frederico de Freitas House Museum features secular collections of sculpture,
painting, printmaking, furniture, ceramics and crystals belonging to the lawyer, notary
and collector Madeiran Dr. Frederico de Freitas.
Of imposing proportions and striking reddish color, this house museum is a striking
presence on the steep Calçada de Santa Clara and a prominent element within the
urban civil architecture of the historic area of São Pedro and the center of Funchal.
This building, formerly owned by Dr. Frederico de Freitas (1894-1978), a lawyer, notary
and collector from Madeira, brings together an impressive array of works of art,
bequeathed to the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 1978.
The project of the museum was completed in 1999 with the completion of the Tile
House, built especially to house the eclectic and vast collection of tiles, with oriental,
islamic, medieval, majolica pieces and a display of Dutch tiles.
This museum's collection includes striking collections of sculpture, painting, engraving,
furniture, ceramics, crystals and tin objects dating from the 17th to 19th centuries.
Religious themes dominate sculpture and painting and, except for some Luso-Oriental
imaginary, the pieces are predominantly European.
