João Gonçalves Zarco Statue

The statue alluding to the historical figure of João Gonçalves Zarco was made by
sculptor Francisco Franco in 1927.
This historical figure is of great importance to the island of Madeira, as discoverer of
the island under the command of Infante Dom Henrique, being later consecrated the
first Captain Donatary of the city of Funchal.
Market of Lavradores
The Farmers Market, inaugurated in 1940, has its own architecture of the Estado Novo,
in an atmosphere of excitement and joy.
The Market of Lavradores, in the center of
Funchal, was inaugurated on November
24, 1940. This project by Edmundo Tavares
(1892-1983) presents the architecture of
the Estado Novo, and reflects the intention
to make it the great supply hub of the city.

Large tile panels of the Batisttini Faience of
Maria de Portugal, dating from 1940 and
painted with regional themes by João
Rodrigues, adorn the façade, the main
door and the fishmonger.

Nowadays this space still performs the
functions for which it was created, selling products of all kinds in an environment
where colors, sounds, smells and different people are mixed.
