PSNA IN THE NEWS

PSNA members and staff have had a busy few months . As the pandemic continues , advocating for all of Pennsylvania ' s nurses has remained a top priority . PSNA ' s CEO , Betsy Snook , and Government Relations Specialist , Noah Logan , were guests on WITF Smart Talk to discuss the nursing shortage . The conversation also hit on legislation involving nurses . When asked the role that government plays in the shortage , Logan explained ,
" Pennsylvania state government needs to make more investments in nursing and in our nursing workforce .
[ Faculty shortage ] is a huge issue . Other states , such as South Carolina , offer faculty loan repayment programs and more ways for faculty to be able to be PHD-prepared so , [ if PA follows suit ] we can graduate more nurses and have more nurses in our workforce . Another thing that state government really needs to do is pass the Patient Safety Act ."

Logan offers this advice for YNP members : " The most important thing you can do is call or email your state senators and representatives . Let them know your story and tell them first-hand what is going on at the bedside , not what the hospital executives want them to hear ."

As the holidays approach , some of you may be working your first holiday shift . Here are a few tips for working on a holiday :
1 . Have some fun ! Have a favorite Thanksgiving recipe ? Plan a potluck with your coworkers ! Missing opening presents on Christmas morning ? Plan a Secret Santa at work !
2 . Plan ahead . Let your loved ones know that you work the holiday as soon as you know . Plan a different day to celebrate together . And don ’ t forget to stake your claim on leftovers !
3 . Be mindful of your patients . They are missing the holidays with their family , too . Find a way to add their traditions into your shift or share some of yours . Perhaps a carol singalong or help them video chat with their loved ones . Happy holidays and I look forward to hearing from you ! -Hunter Murdoch
