Innovate PSL Green Belt and Share It Session
In September, we had the pleasure of hosting two exciting events as part of our Innovate PSL initiative, highlighting the power of process improvement and cross-departmental collaboration.
We began the month with the Innovate PSL Green Belt Training, where team members from various departments came together to learn process improvement strategies based on the Denver Peak Academy model. This hands-on training equipped participants with tools to identify inefficiencies, streamline workflows and drive innovation within their roles. Among the attendees was Grisette Smith from the Utility Systems Department, who not only completed the training but also quickly applied what she learned to implement a successful innovation, earning her Green Belt certification within the same month. Her swift progress is a great example of how impactful this training can be.
Following the training, we held the Green Belt Share It Session, where we proudly recognized six team members who earned their certifications: Christine Brown from the Office of Management & Budget, Christina Flores from Neighborhood Services, Erik Engel and Billy Henson from Finance and Grisette Smith from USD. It was inspiring to hear about the innovative work they’ ve led within their departments. Their projects included streamlining invoice workflows, enhancing the Munis new-user onboarding process and implementing visual management tools for both departmental projects and travel form processes. Each of these improvements reflects a thoughtful approach to making our organization more efficient, transparent and user-friendly.
We look forward to seeing the rest of the September training cohort present their innovations at a future Share It Session and earn their certifications. These events underscore the importance of innovation in building a culture of continuous improvement. By equipping our team members with the tools and mindset to rethink how we work, we’ re not only solving today’ s challenges, we’ re shaping a more agile and effective organization for the future.
Naturally PSL Green Spaces & Places: Youth Council
On Sept. 18, the Youth Council kicked off its first meeting of the year with the launch of the Naturally PSL Subcommittee, designed to bring youth voices into shaping residents’ connection to nature and public spaces. Now in its second year, the subcommittee is awarded the opportunity to join forces with the National Youth Leadership Council through the Youth as Solutions program.
The program is using a service-learning approach, providing learning resources to four youth leaders( the youth leadership team) and an adult advisor, to guide peers within the subcommittee to tackle an environmental challenge that affects our community. The youth leadership team will receive leadership trainings from the National Youth Leadership Council, test out ideas alongside Naturally PSL Subcommittee and the adult advisor, turn insights into concrete recommendations and pilot projects that can be shared with City staff and benefit all residents. This collaboration will not only build leadership among the youth leaders, but also provide a framework to deliver practical, youth-informed solutions for ongoing City initiatives and community challenges.
