Improper battery disposal is responsible for countless garbage truck and facility fires across the U. S. There have been 12 truck fires in the City since 2022! These fires are extremely dangerous and incredibly costly, and cause havoc when they ignite, leaving the truck driver with no choice but to dump the fiery load of trash so the fire can be extinguished.
Residents can easily dispose of old batteries while helping to keep our City safe and environmentally sound.
Here are a few easy disposal options for residents:
• KPSLB collects batteries at Minsky Gym, the MIDFLORIDA Event Center, City Hall and the Community Center.
• The St. Lucie County Baling and Recycling Facility accepts batteries and electronics, including items that have impossible-toremove batteries. The landfill also collects a variety of other household hazardous waste, mostly free of charge. For a complete list of the items accepted at the St. Lucie County landfill, visit their website.
• KPSLB partners with local businesses like PSL Recycling and Treasure Coast Electronic Recycling during our Household Hazardous Waste events, and these businesses serve City residents all year.
• Big box stores and hardware stores may offer in-store battery recycling programs; call ahead first.
