Investing in tomorrow ' s workforce: PATH interns explore Utility Systems
The Utility Systems Department recently welcomed participants from the City ' s PATH Student Internship Program for an engaging behind-the-scenes look at the people, facilities and operations that keep Port St. Lucie running every day.
The presentation introduced interns to the history and growth of the Utility Systems Department, highlighting how the organization has evolved alongside one of Florida ' s fastestgrowing cities. Interns also learned about the department ' s water and wastewater treatment facilities, the journey of drinking water from source to tap and the many processes involved in collecting and treating wastewater.
Beyond the technical side of utility operations, the presentation focused on the wide variety of career opportunities available within the department. From engineering, operations and maintenance to environmental compliance, customer service and leadership, interns gained valuable insight into the many career paths and opportunities for professional growth within Utility Systems.
Senior Assistant Director Daniel Segui encouraged the interns with a motivational message about leadership, public service and the importance of pursuing careers that make a lasting impact on the community. His remarks reinforced the value of hard work, continuous learning and taking advantage of opportunities for personal and professional development.
The experience concluded with a tour of the Utility workshop led by George Ury and Jesse Rodriguez. The pair introduced interns to the City ' s various sewer grinder systems, explained how they support the wastewater collection system and demonstrated some of the skilled craftsmanship involved in maintaining utility infrastructure. Their welding equipment and hands-on discussions generated plenty of questions and sparked interest in the skilled trades that play a critical role in Utility Systems ' success.
Following the visit, Corrie Johnson from Human Resources shared the positive feedback received from the interns, noting that they left the experience " energized, inspired and genuinely appreciative," and that the visit may have sparked an interest in future careers within Utility Systems.
By opening its doors to the next generation of professionals, the Utility Systems Department continues to invest in the future workforce while showcasing the innovation, teamwork and dedication required to provide essential services to the community.
