Risk Management
Quick thinking prevents a potential fire
Sometimes, the most impactful safety moments happen in a matter of seconds, and thanks to the swift action of Carmen Capezzuto, Director of Neighborhood Services, a minor incident didn’ t become something far more serious.
While walking through the second floor of City Hall, Carmen noticed smoke coming from an unattended toaster oven with food inside. Recognizing the potential danger, he immediately unplugged the appliance. After carefully checking its temperature, he picked it up and carried it downstairs to move it to a safe location outside the building.
As he was relocating the toaster oven, the fire alarm was triggered, a clear sign that the situation could have escalated rapidly if not for his swift response. Because of Carmen’ s calm and proactive actions, what could have become a fire hazard was quickly and safely resolved without injury or damage.
Safety takeaway: Never leave cooking equipment unattended and always speak up or act when you see a potential hazard. Carmen’ s actions remind us that safety is everyone’ s responsibility, and quick decisions can make all the difference.
Please join us in recognizing Carmen for his outstanding leadership and commitment to keeping our workplace safe!
