Juneteenth, an evening of learning, reflection and celebration
The City of Port St. Lucie welcomed residents to the MIDFLORIDA Event Center on Friday, June 19, for its annual Juneteenth celebration. The evening brought together community members of all ages to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth while celebrating the history, culture and contributions of African Americans through music, storytelling, education and interactive performances.
The program began with a welcome from Mayor Shannon Martin, followed by performances of the National Anthem and " Lift Every Voice and Sing " by Muffy Charles and the River of Life Fellowship Choir. Guests also enjoyed African drumming and dance by Culture Arts Theatre, along with musical performances throughout the evening by local artists, including saxophonist Alex Buckle.
This year ' s program placed a strong emphasis on education and reflection. Pamela Carithers shared the history and legacy of the Lincoln Park community, while Patricia Mullins presented the story of Juneteenth, helping attendees better understand the journey from emancipation to the establishment of Juneteenth as a national holiday. The evening also featured a heartfelt tribute to Opal Lee, whose lifelong advocacy played a key role in making Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday.
Attendees were also treated to a delicious barbecue sampling generously provided by Matt ' s Bar B Q. Great food and great company brought everyone together, adding to the warm, welcoming spirit of the celebration.
The celebration concluded on an uplifting note with audience participation, music and dance, giving residents an opportunity to come together in a meaningful and memorable way.
Events like Juneteenth are an important reminder of our community ' s commitment to recognizing history, celebrating diversity and creating opportunities for residents to learn from one another. Thank you to the many performers, presenters, volunteers, sponsors and City staff whose time and dedication made this year ' s celebration possible, and to everyone who joined us for an evening of learning, reflection and celebration.
