Let the light shine through
The Code Compliance Division would like to remind residents that the only instance where storm shutters can be placed on an occupied home is when we are in the path of a named storm. Storm shutters can remain on an unoccupied home for the duration of hurricane season( June 1-Nov. 30), but must be removed outside of season.
Code Compliance takes this matter seriously and will follow procedures to achieve compliance including, but not limited to, issuing code citations to any resident found in violation of the storm shutter ordinance.
Leaving a house shuttered creates safety issues for occupants and first responders in the event of a house fire. For more information on our hurricane shutter ordinance, please watch our Know Your Codes video here.

LET’ S TALK
SHUTTERS
Know the fire-safety risks and how you can help keep your home and first responders safe.
RISKS
Let the light Shine through.
It ' s time to remove your shutters.
Blocked exits prevent escape from the home.
Pets often perish in residential fires each year, most from smoke inhalation.
DIFFICULTIES FOR FIREFIGHTERS
Blocked windows and doors make it difficult for firefighters to get into your home to fight the fire and search for occupants.
Responders can be trapped in a home if exits are blocked.
Heat and fuel can stay trapped in a shuttered home, making fighting fires very risky.
When a fire occurs, your neighbors may be impacted due to excessive smoke and fire conditions.

The much-needed improvements to the culvert and swale infrastructure of section 41 should help alleviate flooding and drainage issues during heavy rains by increasing capacity and water flow. During Phase 5, 19 locations were repaired or replaced including areas along SW College Park Road, SW Sandbar Street, SW Hillsboro Circle, SW Suffolk Lane, SW Varsity Lane, SW Pierson Lane and SW Stillman Avenue.
Phase 5 of the Windmill Point culvert project should be complete in the coming weeks.
