Utility Systems
Career fairs foster new job candidates
Port St. Lucie Utility Systems staff attended three career fairs throughout April. Somerset College Preparatory Academy hosted its fair on April 3 and the Economic Development Council( EDC) of St. Lucie County, in conjunction with St. Lucie Public Schools, hosted its fairs on April 8 and 22 at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center and Fenn Center in Fort Pierce.
Staff spoke with hundreds of high school juniors and seniors who were interested in learning more about the four different trainee opportunities Utility Systems offers for candidates 18 and older with a high school diploma.
At the EDC’ s career fair in February last year, staff met Treasure Coast High School senior Kerby Jeanlouis, who was hired in July 2024 as a Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee. He just passed the state test and will soon have the required hours to earn his“ C” operator’ s license and advance from his trainee position to a licensed operator.
At this year’ s EDC career fair, staff met three seniors from Kerby’ s alma mater, Treasure Coast High School. The young men knew Kerby from school and were excited to hear they could tour the plant, just like Kerby did last year. They met us at the Prineville Water Treatment Facility on April 15 and Kerby led their tour.
The three seniors saw Kerby as their peer and asked tons of questions. Kerby did a great job explaining everything to them. It was truly awesome to watch Kerby shine and take such pride in the work he does for Utility Systems. This generation is our future and this is a great example of how we can continue fostering these relationships.
The three young men were very excited about the possibility of working alongside Kerby someday. We expect to see job applications from all three once they graduate in May.
