Emergency Management

Prepare now: Build your emergency kit
As we approach the start of hurricane season, the City of Port St. Lucie’ s Emergency Management team is encouraging all residents to begin preparing now.
Bringing hurricane preparedness to the community
On April 20, the Office of Emergency Management met with residents of the Sandpiper Bay Community Association.
At this outreach event, the team talked about
the risks associated with tropical storms and hurricanes, including strong winds, heavy rain and flooding. We also covered how flood zones differ from evacuation zones and explained where people can find information specific to their property.
Additionally, the group discussed what kind of items should be considered and included when building emergency kits and some of the best ways to stay informed before, during and after a storm.

Taking simple steps today can make a tremendous difference in keeping you and your family safe during a storm.
One of the most important preparedness actions is building a well-stocked emergency supply kit. A good kit should sustain your household for at least 72 hours and include items such as:
• Water( 1 gallon per person per day)
• Non-perishable snacks and food items
• Prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Phone chargers, battery packs and backup power banks
• Copies of important documents( IDs, insurance policies, medical information) stored in a waterproof folder
• Flashlights, extra batteries and a manual can opener
Don’ t forget your pets! Animals need emergency kits, too. Be sure to include:
• Pet food and treats
• Water and bowls
• Leashes, carriers and comfort items
• Medications and vaccination records
Starting early means avoiding the last-minute rush and ensuring your family has what it needs before a storm is on the horizon. Preparedness is a shared responsibility and together we can help keep our community safe and resilient.
