Working together to improve a green space
The Strategic Initiatives and Innovation Team is continuing our engagement in the Whispering Pines neighborhood in collaboration with the Love Your Block program, supported by the Trust for the Public Land On Common Ground grant.
Our team of 10 volunteers spent a Saturday morning at the neighborhood green space with a unique mission. We released 50 specialized beetles and 20,000 thrips to biologically control two of Florida’ s most aggressive invasive plants: the air potato plant and Brazilian pepper. By using biological controls, we can reduce invasive growth without the need for harsh chemicals.
This event was made possible through our educational partnership with the University of Florida’ s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences( UF / IFAS) St. Lucie County extension. Following the release, volunteers spoke with a Citycontracted arborist to learn about the long-term management plan and opportunities for replanting with native species.
Save the date: Join us at 9 a. m. April 25, when our Youth Council and residents will help plant native fruit trees and small gardens to continue transforming this green space into a community gem. www. CityofPSL. com
