Staff from the Parks and Recreation Department and the Community Redevelopment Agency ( CRA ) recently presented a session as part of the Florida Recreation and Parks Association ’ s ( FRPA ) Virtual Education Series .

This was the perfect opportunity to continue to showcase The Port District Master Plan , capital projects and how the project team navigated through several challenges undertaking multiple projects on one site , at one time ... and during a pandemic . Much to the presenters ’ surprise , 26 attendees from 14 states participated in the hour-long training session , followed by an engaging Q & A session !

The Port District Master Plan was adopted by City Council in Summer 2021 and projects were in full spring in late Summer 2022 . Development at the southern end of the district included the construction of the Pioneer Park playground , expanded event lawn , renovation of historic homes and additional river-touching amenities , including an overwater stage and canoe / kayak launch .

These improvements , coupled with required infrastructure , will provide patrons with an unparalleled recreation experience along the North Fork of the St . Lucie River . The improvements were completed and open to the public in June 2024 , with a large grand opening event known as PortFest . In addition to the completed elements , a River Food Garden is being curated for the site that will provide multiple dining options for visitors . It is set to break ground in the coming months .
