Sports enthusiasts like to throw the word “ dynasty ” around to describe teams and programs that excel . Type “ sports dynasty ” into Google and the definitions that pop up describe a team that dominates their sport or league for several seasons . The search is likely to produce names like the Boston Celtics , the New York Yankees , and the Green Bay Packers .
Focus the search light on the sport of volleyball and the coordinates of the Ohio River Valley and the query should generate the Providence Pioneers . The 2023 season produced the team ’ s fifth state championship in girls ’ volleyball , a distinct and unique piece of evidence of the school ’ s dynasty .
Coach Terri Purichia reflected on the role she plays in a purpose , passion , and relationships that creates something much bigger than any one person or team . “ There are always several factors that contribute to success in a sport . For the Providence Volleyball program , three of the factors seem to be tradition , family , and player buy-in ,” explained the coach .

Let ’ s examine all three as we remember an incredibly special season and ponder the legacy that is being created .
TRADITION
The atmosphere created by any small group can be significant , but the dynamic that can take place generated by a sport at a high school can weave the threads of the community , the school body , and the team participants into an amazing tapestry . Tradition within sports teams creates a sense of purpose , raises awareness of things of value , and develops intensely close relationships .
Having traditions adds experiences for students to look forward to other than just playing the sport , further developing a spirit and uniting the team . Many of the traditions are passed down from generation to generation , creating bonds that unite teams even after the seniors have graduated .
“ FOR THE PROVIDENCE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM , THREE OF THE FACTORS SEEM TO BE TRADITION , FAMILY , AND PLAYER BUY- IN ,”
“ Our tradition is aided by the stability of a continuity of leadership ,” commented Coach Purichia . “ The volleyball program is blessed to have had only three head coaches . Dottie Zipp coached for 21 seasons from 1974 to 1994 . Dee Dee Olmstead was here for the next 4 seasons from 1995 to 1998 . I started the next year in 1999 .”
“ Anything that generates a positive experience and atmosphere is good for the entire school environment ,” said Providence Principal Steve Beyl . “ Sport teams provide a lesson for the entire school .”
