5. Next, have students brainstorm a short list of several people with similar goals whom
they deem “successful.” For example, a student who wants to be a talk show host may
think of Oprah Winfrey or Ellen Degeneres. An aspiring singer may think of Beyoncé
or Taylor Swift. After the list is compiled, students should research the individuals on
their list to identify the life skills of successful people.
ASSESSMENT:
At home or during another class meeting, the students will write a short essay titled “I
Am Tough Enough to Make It,” identifying why they will be successful in achieving
their goals. They might write this as a journal entry.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT:
• What risks have you taken that have enabled you to succeed in some way?
• What risks do you think I might have to take in my life in order to succeed in some
way?

v Students are asked to share the handout “Words of Wisdom” with their
parents/guardians. Then they will interview one or both parents/guardians, asking
these questions:
