5. Students may develop a creative display that explains the advantages and
disadvantages of the alternative school they have chosen to research. Consider the
following two creative formats:
6. Instead of making one of these creative displays, students can prepare mini-reports
(either oral or written) on their assigned school.
ASSESSMENT:
Choose one or more of the following means of assessment:
1. Students may write an opinion paper explaining why parents should have choices in
their child’s education and whether they agree or disagree with the idea of offering
tax credits and/or vouchers to help parents pay for nonpublic schooling for their
children.
2. Students may create a commercial, song, or other medium to advertise their preferred
choice of educational alternatives.
3. Students may have the contributions they made to the “mirror mobile” or “school
silhouette” bulletin board assessed for a grade.
4. Students may have their oral or written reports on their selected school be assessed.

I Can Teach Others
v Large cutouts of hand-held mirrors can be made from heavy construction paper
with ovals of aluminum foil glued on each side. On the handle could be written
the type of school. Put on one side (face) of the mirror a list of the advantages or
pros for this type of school; and on the other side (face), put a list of
disadvantages or cons for this type of school. The mirrors could be hung from
their top edge to form a large classroom mobile of the “Many Faces of
Education.” The class as a whole could design a mirror to represent traditional
public schools to include in the mobile.
v As an alternative, a bulletin board could be created by having students make a
construction paper cutout of a schoolhouse silhouette for each education
alternative. Label each at the top or bottom as to what type of educational
alternative it represents and its definition. Place in the schoolhouse two large
colorful silhouettes of a person’s head facing away from each other. Label one
silhouette “Advantages” (or pros) and list the advantages; label the other
silhouette “Disadvantages” (or cons) and list the disadvantages.
