Students will recognize the characteristics of effective teaching.
DESCRIPTOR:
Students will compare various types of schooling options.
ACTIVITIES:
1. Have students brainstorm the reasons why parents may want to send their children to
an independent, private, or special purpose school. After generating this list, have
students name as many types of independent, private, and special purpose schools as
they can.
2. If any class members have previously attended a nontraditional school, ask them to
share with the class what it was like. Then distribute copies of “Alternatives to
Traditional Public Education.”
3. If feasible, have the class visit some private schools or special purpose schools.
4. As an alternative, divide the class into groups or pairs and have them select a specific
type of educational alternative from the alternatives handout. Students will
investigate the alternative they have chosen through the internet. Encourage them to
check out the Education Week website (http://www.edweek.org). If internet access is
not available, students may conduct personal interviews.
