4. Describe the following situation:
6. The Observer takes notes on how well the two persons work together. (The
Observer can use the “Observer's Notebook” handout.) How good are the directions
Anderson gives? How well does Byrd carry out the directions? How cooperative are
the two people? What communication problems exist? What could they have done
differently to make things work better?
7. If all the containers are not finished in 20 minutes, have the groups stop. Test the
completed containers. Allow the observers to go over their observations with
Anderson and Byrd.
8. Combine each three-person team with another group of three, and have the two
groups discuss the following questions. (See “Shipwreck Discussion Questions”
handout.) Appoint a note taker in each group who can report to the whole class on
the following:
⇒ How did each person playing Anderson feel?
⇒ How did each person playing Byrd feel?
⇒ How does each Observer feel about how Anderson and Byrd could have
improved their method of communication and cooperation?

MODULE 5:
5. The Observer instructs Anderson to hold his hands behind his back and blindfolds
Byrd. Byrd is not to say a word during the entire building process. The Observer
will enforce this rule. Stress the fact that the container must hold water when it is
completed, and tell the students that each container will be tested. (You will need a
jug of water and a pan for this purpose.)
I Can Teach Others
Anderson and Byrd were on a journey in their ship when they suddenly developed
engine trouble, and the boat began to sink rapidly. They were able to swim to a
deserted island where there is no fresh water. They will be rescued in a few days, but
they must have water if they are to survive long enough for the rescue boat to arrive.
They have some materials for making a container to hold rainwater. The only
problem is that Byrd received a heavy blow on the head and is now both blind and
unable to speak. Anderson burned both of his hands badly and is not able to use them
at all. But they must build the container if they are to live. A rain cloud is quickly
approaching, and they must have the container finished before it reaches the island.
A few drops are already beginning to fall.
