The Shipwreck

SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT:
For each set of three students, you will need
v a blindfold
v 5-6 pieces of irregular cardboard to make the water container (each group’s set
should be identical)
v a jug of water and a drain pan to test containers
v duct tape or wide masking tape
v a video camera (Videotape activity for the blindfolded student.)

STANDARD:
Students will recognize the characteristics of effective teaching.
DESCRIPTOR:
Students will explain the importance of using different teaching strategies and
methodologies to instruct students.
ACTIVITIES:
Note: (Adapted from Joining Together, Johnson & Johnson, 1987)
1. Explain to the students that today they are going to be involved in a cooperative
activity involving a shipwreck.
2. First, divide your class into groups of three. Choose one member of the group to play
the role of Observer, another member to play the role of Anderson, and a third
member to play the role of Byrd.
3. Each trio of students will need the following materials:
v a blindfold
v 5-6 odd-sized pieces of cardboard
v duck tape or wide masking tape
