Students will examine cultural differences with the goal of developing respect for other cultures. ACTIVITIES: 1. Introduce this activity by reading to your students the essay “Perspectives on the World by Ingrid Hutto.” Please study it carefully before you read aloud to your students. You may choose to read only an excerpt or two. They may have tough questions – be ready! MODULE 3: DESCRIPTOR: I Can Be Different STANDARD: 2. Lead a discussion with students to define the word “minority.” You might include being the only girl or boy in a class, being the youngest or oldest in a group, or being the shortest or tallest. You might also explore situations in which a person is the only member of his race in a group. Have students had such experiences? If you have students of more than one race in your class, you might encourage several to tell how they feel when they have such an experience. 3. Remind students that teachers often find themselves in situations in which they are teaching young people who are of a different gender or race. To be effective, teachers must be able to overcome the gender and cultural barriers and reach each child. 4. Divide the students into groups of four or five.
