Communication Style Inventory
Communication Style Profiles Sheet
The Do’s and Don’ts of Communicating with a _____ Communicator
Writing Activity Sheet
Students will understand the characteristics of effective communication.
DESCRIPTOR:
Students will identify their own communication styles.
ACTIVITIES:
Everyone has a unique style of communicating. The students will explore their own
communication styles by taking a communication style inventory.
1. Pose the questions: What do we mean when we say that each person has his own
communication style?
2. Have them imagine for a moment that they are listening to a conversation among
several of their friends. Are some of their friends very direct and get straight to the
point? Do others take all day to finally get around to the point they are trying to
make? Can they point out friends who never give a clue as to what’s going on in their
heads? Help them see that their friends reveal something about their communication
styles whenever they communicate with us and vice versa.
3. Distribute the “Communication Style Inventory.” Explain that researchers point to
four types of language styles. The inventory will help them find out more about their
own communication styles.
4. Have students complete the survey and calculate their results. Discuss how accurate
the results appear to be.
