we were ready for the first pilot , which was carried out in Bogota , Colombia . Representatives for 21 NGOs and voluntary organizations participated . IPMA Colombia ( https :// adipro . org /) hosted the first IPMA PM4NP ( project management for nonprofits ) pilot where people from Selvacéutica , among many other NPOs , were trained in Project Management and have acquired new competences in this area .
One of the participants was Karina Garcia Torres ( no 1 from the left on the picture ). She told me about an initiative in her home region , under very difficult circumstances , that really touched me . I therefore continued some investigations via Internet . This article is based on these sources , as well as interviews with Mabel and Karina , who turned out to be Mabel ’ s cousin , and with additional good help from Karina .
The Chocó region
Chocó ( marked in red ) is a department of Western Colombia ( marked in light yellow ) known for its large Afro-Colombian population . It is in the west of the country , and is the only Colombian department to have coastlines on both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans . It contains all of Colombia ' s border with Panama . Its capital town is Quibdó . The Chocó Department is covered mostly by the Baudó Mountains . The total population as of 2016 was about half a million , with more than half living in the Quibdó valley . According to the national 2018 census the ethnic composition of the department is :
• Afro-Colombians ( 78.9 )
• Amerindians or Indigenous ( 16 %)
• Whites and Crossbreds ( 5.1 %)
In Colombia , there are multiple territories rich in biodiversity such as the Chocó Biogeographic , which has tropical rainforests that surpass 46,000 square kilometers , and where one of the greatest riches in biological diversity of the planet is concentrated . It is estimated that in the Amazon rainforest there is 20 % of the world ' s oxygen , 50 % of
