TUNE PROTECT NURTURES ORANG ASLI COMMUNITIES
January 2020, Kuala Lumpur
- TUNE Protect Group Berhad
(Tune Protect) sets out the year
with the next phase of its Financial
Literacy,
Empowerment
&
Entrepreneurship
programme
called FLEE. It is a flagship
programme started since 2018
for Orang Asli communities
with the aim of supporting
and encouraging them to step
out of their comfort zones and
venture into entrepreneurship
as a way out of poverty. Since
then, the FLEE programme
has
successfully
benefitted
Orang Asli communities from
5 different tribes and states.
The FLEE programme
is
a
3-phase
programme
which
consists
of
3-day
bootcamps carried out in close
collaboration with Majlis Belia
Orang Asli (MBOA). The all-
inclusive bootcamp welcomes
the participation of Orang
Asli youths from any tribe,
village and state. MBOA assists
participants to follow through
with their new learnings from
the bootcamps when they return
to their respective villages.
It is hoped that these Orang
Asli youths will also inspire
other youths in their villages to
improve their livelihood through
entrepreneurship.
Throughout
the
programme, the Orang Asli youths
are introduced to four practical
concepts which include EARNING
through
entrepreneurship;
SAVINGfor business expansion
and for rainy days; SPENDING
on
living
essentials
and
necessities; and PROTECTION
against mishaps that may occur.
“Many Orang Asli youths
either drop out of school to help
support their families or only
complete secondary education,
which leads to limited job
opportunities,” said Yap Hsu Yi,
Tune Protect Chief of People &
Culture . “With the Orang Asli
FLEE Programme, Tune Protect
aims to provide practical and
interactive
assistance
when
their educational path comes
to a sudden halt after leaving
school. We want to show the
Orang Asli community that they
are not forgotten, and we would
like to support them in their
journey to become independent
entrepreneurs,” she continued.
Orang
Asli
Inaugural
Bootcamps, The first Orang Asli
FLEE bootcamps were carried out
in late 2018, where participants
brainstormed with the principal
trainer and facilitators in
group discussions, exchanged
experiences, shared ideas and
stories about challenges they
encounter. Recognising the merits
of this effort, Jabatan Kemajuan
Orang Asli (JAKOA) has invited
Tune Protect to collaborate in
setting the platform for the
Orang Asli communities for
entrepreneurship. Subsequently,
Tune Protect organised the
second phase of the bootcamp in
September 2019 to help formalise
thebusinesses started by the
Orang Asli participants who were
inspired by their first bootcamp.
A total of 3 Orang Asli
businesses were successfully
registered with the Companies
Commission of Malaysia (SSM)
during this second phase: Orang
Asli Bamboo Straw Enterprise by
the Semelai entrepreneurs from
Negeri Sembilan; Orang Asli
Beauty by Jahut entrepreneurs
from Pahang; and Orang Asli
Zara
Enterprise
by
Semai
entrepreneurs
from
Perak.
Tune Protect plans to carry
out the third and final phase of
the Orang Asli FLEE Programme
early this year, which will
encompass the sponsorship of
new laptops, productivity suite
training,
basic
bookkeeping
