Ghosts

Mark woke up to find himself in an uncomfortable bed in the corner of a dark, concrete room. Mark sat up and looked around the room. In the corner of the room there was a table with a flickering candle, a bowl, a cup of water and a note. Mark rubbed the side of his head and felt a sharp sting. He tried to recall the events that led to him being there, but all he could remember was these nightmarish machines. Each memory scared him more and more. Eventually he snapped out of it, and got up. He slowly stumbled to the table and picked up the note. The note read 'Sorry about knocking you out Mark but it was for your own good, we couldn't risk anyone finding out about our base. - Reaper'. Mark put back the note and his stomach started growling. He picked up the bowl and took it to the bed. "Soup, my favourite," Mark muttered. As he was eating he saw a silhouette of a door in the darkest corner. He put the soup back and picked the note up again. This time he noticed there was another note on the back. This note read 'by the way of you want to leave the room there's a key wrapped in paper under your bed. Mark sighed and wondered why he didn't check anything. He walked back over to his bed and found the key. As he unwrapped the key he saw another note on it. The note read 'Mark if you want to join us and fight back go to your right down the corridor, if you want to leave go left. The key works for either door, it's your choice. I hope you make the right choice. - Rune'. Mark walked up to the door. As he unlocked it the door gave a large clunk. The corridor behind it was lit up by a red faint flickering light. "Do I join then or do I leave," Mark asked himself "I have so many unanswered questions that these guys could answer, on the other hand if I leave I may never have to see those things again and could find my mum,"

"It looks like he will choose to leave Reaper," said Rune. Reaper grunted in acknowledgement. Mark started to walk to the left but stopped. Something deep inside of him drew him towards the door to join the others. He slid the bolt and unlocked the door. He walked in to a dark cold room. The door closed behind him a light lit up in the middle of the room. In the light was a stand with a suit of body armour similar to the ones Reaper and Rune wore. On a table next to the stand was the helmet and a bunch of design tools. Mark picked up a white pencil. He stood there for a second thinking what to draw on his helmet. "Got it," Mark said triumphantly. He began drawing the out lines of numbers four rows tall. After a while he had filled in the numbers, missing out bits of them deliberately. On his helmet he had stencilled 01001101 01100001 01110010 01101011. As he put the helmet on the stand he heard a clunk. A door behind the stand and a tall slim woman walked through. "You chose to stay with us then?" The woman asked.

"Yes," Mark replied. "Who are you?"

"It's me Rune," Rune replied "guess you don't recognise me without the armour," Rune turned around and left the room and beckoned Mark to follow. Mark proceeded to follow Rune closing the door behind him. The next room was similar to the other except for the fact that it had a large table and a fire place. There was two men sat talking to each other at one end of the table. Rune walked over to them and joined in their conversation. The tallest of the two men got up and walked towards Mark. "I'm guessing you have a lot of questions?" The man said "take a seat we will answer as many as we can," Mark took a seat next to Rune. "Who are you guys?" Mark asked "what is this place?"

"My real name is Maia, Reapers is Nero and that guy in the corner Mac," Rune replied

"This is our bunker," responded Nero. "We could be stuck here for years,"

"I don't remember seeing Mac in the city," Mark said "who is he?"

"You didn't see me because I was here," Mac replied "saw the news report and headed straight here to get the power running for these guys,"

"Ok," said Mark "so what are those things in the city?"

"Those 'things' are machines that were developed by the American military, but by the looks of it they lost control," Nero answered. "London is now a waste land,"

"What!" Mark shouted "what about my friends, my mum

"As far as we know we are the only ones that made it," Replied Maia sadly. With that Mark burst into tears. Maia tried to comfort him but couldn't get him to stop crying. "Mark calm down, it doesn't mean the worst has happened," Maia said soothingly "I just means we didn't see anyone else leave," Mark kept crying and nothing seemed to make it better.

"Brilliant, out of anyone you could of saved you saved a big cry baby," muttered Mac.

"Shut up!" Maia shouted "go tinker with one of your stupid machines," Mac shoved his way past Nero and left the room. "Mac wait up," called Nero as he chased after him. In the light Mark could see Nero better. Nero had short dark black hair and was fair muscular, he looked barely 30. "Are you hungry?" Maia asked. Mark shook his head. "How's your head,"

"Still hurts," Mark whimpered. Maia got and walked to the corner of the room. She stood there fiddling with a little box. When she came back she offered Mark a sweet. "That's my secret stash," Maia whispered "Don't tell Nero or Mac," Mark accepted the sweet.

"I won't say a word," Mark replied "where can I get some sleep?"

Maia got up and head to the door he came through. Mark got up and followed. As they walked through the corridor he came from he noticed there were others doors along it. Maia stopped in front of the room he came from. "I'll see you tomorrow then," said Maia "night,"

"Good night," Mark responded .
