Robert Juliat Celebrating Centennial Anniversary
Throughout 2019, French
followspot company Rob-
ert Juliat is celebrating its
centennial anniversary.
Robert Juliat, who
founded his eponymous
company in 1919, was
the son of cinema effects,
projection, and lighting
specialist Jean Juliat, and
opened his first shop
in Paris selling cinema
and theatre lighting
equipment. In the 1920s
through the 1960s,
SOLOTECH’S STÉPHANE LAVERDURE
Juliat produced carbon
arc projectors for cinemas, manufacturing all the components involved, and also
supplied purpose-built lighting. Juliat’s son, Jean Charles Juliat, joined the com-
pany in the 1960s and took over in the early ‘70s, remaining its leader until 2009.
He broadened the company’s focus, working on “son et lumiere” productions and
steering it towards the development of stage lighting. In the 1990s, Robert Juliat
was the first lighting company to introduce DMX dimmer control in profiles and
followspots.
Today, Robert Juliat, which is now led by Jean Charles’ son, François, occu-
pies a 75,000-sq.-ft. factory in France and has won multiple PLASA Awards for
Innovation over the last decade.
