Oxford college invests in load bearing bracket support system

ISO Chemie’ s thermal insulating and load bearing bracket support system has been specified for a new sustainable residential development at an Oxford college.
The move sees ISO-TOP WIN- FRAMER‘ TYPE 1’ units being fitted to support and insulate the triple glazed aluminium windows and doors installed at Wolfson College’ s new three-storey
residential development. When completed in spring next year, the Garden Building will provide 50 high-quality student bedrooms, supported by communal kitchens, shared study areas, and a thoughtful design that prioritises community, wellbeing and sustainability.
Located on the site of a former car park, the development comes as the College, which specialises in graduate studies in global
health, environmental studies, economics, and humanities, is looking to move away from fossil fuels- the building’ s design honours the College’ s original Grade II-listed architecture while introducing a modern and environmentally responsible new space.
Passivhaus certified and fire rated to up to 30 minutes, ISO- TOP WINFRAMER‘ TYPE 1’ is a prefabricated installation frame, manufactured to accommodate cavities up to 250mm that allows windows to be supported independently from the face of the wall regardless of any external cladding being in place.
Quick and easy to install, the product’ s application is seen as part of a solution to meet the College’ s ambitions to reduce carbon levels across its property estate, particularly residential accommodation that has a reputation for leaking considerable amounts of energy, heat and sound.
The composite ISO-TOP WINFRAMER‘ TYPE 1’ brackets can bear heavy window loads, including
bi-fold doors, to provide a reliable, strong and high-performance support frame. Installation is quick with windows attached directly and secured mechanically using either standard fixing screws or fixing lugs in the usual manner.
A hinged insulation core combines with the composite structural bracket to become an
integral part of the overall wall structure, providing compliance with Building Energy Act requirements and the RAL quality assurance association.
Perkins & Will are the architect and lead designer for the Garden Building project at Wolfson College.

New IGU Testing & Compliance Support Service Launched

In response to the recent news that the OPSS is turning its attention to IGU manufacturers and glass unit performance, industry stalwart Andy Jones has launched GlassCheck UK- a new product testing and compliance support service, which will help IGU manufacturers to evidence compliance with BS EN 1279.
The new, low-cost, monthly testing service will see up to 50 units tested for argon gas concentration per visit using state of the art, non-destructive SparkLike Laser testing technology. All test data is appropriately recorded so that companies can demonstrate compliance, ensure up-to-date product labelling and protect their business from potential future liability.
Andy Jones, director of Glass- Check UK, says:“ The Office for Product Safety and Standards( OPSS) has set-out their stall with their 2026 Heat Soaked Thermally
Toughened Glass Sector Regulatory Report. They visited every Heat Soaked toughened glass manufacturer and though the product was, in the main, up-toscratch, most businesses were found to be non-compliant due to insufficient paper-trails and test data evidence to support their Declaration of Performance( DoP) certificates.
“ The result was that the OPSS issued 9 prohibition notices, stopping these businesses from supplying products, and 25 companies were issued warnings requiring them to address their non-compliance issues. Now, the OPSS is turning its attention to IGUs and compliance with BS EN 1279.
“ The OPSS has the power and the resources to make unannounced visits to check compliance
, so the million-dollar question for IGU manufacturers is: does every IGU that leaves your factory receive the same care and attention as your annual test units? If the answer is no, you could be putting your business at risk.”
Glass Check UK’ s test services also include non-destructive tests on installed units in buildings, argon gas concentration, dew point and glass emissivity tests to determine the real-world performance of installed IGUs.
Andy continues:“ GlassCheck UK has been created to support the industry, helping IGU manufacturers to prove and document that their units meet the requirements of BS EN 1279 and support the commercial sector with certainty that their windows are maintaining high performance throughout their lifecycle.
“ Our goals are twofold: protect IGU manufacturing businesses from the ever-increasing regulatory scrutiny and ensure high-quality insulated glass units are performing as they should be, to improve efficiency and help us meet the government’ s Net Zero targets.”
