CHOOSE BEST IN CLASS WITH ROOF
MAKER’S REFLEX® GLAZING OPTIONS
Story continued from the front page
British rooflight manufac-
Howard Trotter, Business Manager of leading windows and doors
manufacturer Shelforce speaking at Glazing Summit 2019
Reaping the rewards
Howard started working with
Shelforce in 2013 when the busi-
ness was facing major financial
challenges.
But thanks to his experience
in lean manufacturing and team
building, production efficiency has
increased by 759% and the com-
pany has gone from an operating
loss of £1.8million to now making
a profit.
Howard said: “Disabled workers
can make exceptionally loyal, ded-
icated, and hard-working employ-
ees in this or any other industry
and we have benefitted massively
from this in-built resilience.
“Having an integrated approach
to employment requires an uncon-
ventional recruitment process, and
a hands-on, practical approach
to training that replicates the
factory floor operations – but if
you’re willing to make that initial
investment, you’re rewarded with
the most passionate and dedicated
workers you could ask for.”
Training facility
To further cement its reputation
as an inclusive employer, Shelforce
is in the process of opening a ded-
icated training facility at its factory
in Erdington to provide regular
work experience placements for
students from nearby schools, in-
cluding special needs schools.
Howard said: “By offering reg-
ular work experience placements,
we want to help young adults of
all abilities take their first steps
into the workplace – and contin-
ue a proud legacy of supporting
Birmingham’s population.
“We have already developed
a close relationship with Oscott
Manor School in Birmingham, a
community school catering to chil-
dren with autism, and we hope to
establish similar links with other
schools in the area.
“It’s vitally important that we
help future-proof the industry
when it comes to skills.”
Encouraging others
Howard joined a stellar line-up
of speakers at the 2019 Glazing
Summit at Edgbaston Stadium
and Conference Centre and spoke
about the future of skills and tack-
ling the skills shortage as part of
the Barriers to Growth debate.
“One of our aims at Shelforce
is to encourage other businesses
to adopt our inclusive employ-
ment approach and give it a try,”
explained Howard.
“It’s why being able to speak
about it at events such as the Glaz-
ing Summit is brilliant.
“As I said, there are answers to
the skills shortage out there, but
we all need to know collectively
what those answers are.”
turer, Roof Maker, is aiding profes-
sionals in increasing the thermal
efficiency and aesthetics of its
customers’ homes by offering
four distinct glass options that are
available across its wide range of
rooflights and roof lanterns.
The specialist UV and IR block-
ing glass provides super insulating
properties to reduce potential
heat loss throughout a property.
This is supported by a unit seal
that is 80% deeper than industry
standards, enabling Roof Maker to
deliver an impressive life expec-
tancy of 30 years.
The Reflex® glass options can
be selected individually or can be
combined together to meet each
client’s unique requirements. Sup-
plied as standard, the Energy Sav-
ing offering features two or three
panes of toughened safety glass to
deliver the lowest U-values possi-
ble, with each pane separated by
an argon / krypton-filled cavity
and a foam spacer. An impres-
sive U-value of 0.5W/m²K can be
achieved with this choice.
For greater temperature con-
trol, the Solar Performance option
features a solar reflective coating
that repels the heat of the sun,
providing G-values as low as 23%
to minimise solar gain. This keeps
homeowners’ rooms cooler in
summer and warmer in winter,
important for properties that are
south or west facing.
For urban areas, the Acoustic
Performance range is the ideal
choice as it is specifically designed
to minimise noise pollution. It pro-
vides effective insulation against
exterior noises such as traffic and
neighbouring properties. This style
is most effective when combined
with triple glazing.
Finally, the Security Performance
option features Roof Maker’s stand-
ard glazing composition with lam-
inated glass. This makes it harder
for intruders to break through as
the glass is primed with a plastic
interlayer, which prevents shatter-
ing, keeping it in one piece.
Sabahudin Medic, Technical
Director at Roof Maker, said: “At
Roof Maker we are committed to
designing and manufacturing the
most innovative and affordable
glazing solutions for our clients.
We are extremely proud to be a
British manufacturer that produces
all of our products in Leicester-
shire, enabling us to offer the very
highest standards in quality and
performance.”
