A VIEW ON BI-FOLDING DOORS

Neil Ginger, CEO at Origin, explains why bi-folding doors are one of the preferred choices for installers when looking to link the home and garden.
Over the past ten years, property design has evolved significantly to place greater importance on the connection between the home and garden. Whether a new build or renovation project, creating a space with an abundance of natural light and a great view of the outdoors is almost always top of the priority list for homeowners. According to Palmer Research, the bi-folding door market is increasing by ten per cent year-on-year.
Why Bi-Folding Doors?
Whether it’ s a converted barn, three-storey town house or sprawling country manor, bi-folding doors will transform any build by creating a unique, unrivalled and uninterrupted link between the house and garden.
Configurations for the Home
Aluminium is now the most popular material choice when choosing
bi-fold doors, due to the innate properties it offers a property.
The aluminium used in Origin Bi-fold Doors is extremely strong, yet weighs 67 per cent less than steel. It combines strength and robustness with a lightweight structure, and offers fantastic flexibility in terms of configuration. Origin offers anything from a two-door set through to an eight-leaf door set, bay or even 90-degree corner set with moving posts.
Sold on the View
More than half of homeowners chose the room with the best view as their favourite in the house, as revealed in Origin research. Aluminium bi-folding doors allow for the slimmest sightlines to create the best view possible, which is another reason they remain the top choice for homeowners.
The sightlines of an Origin Bi-fold Door strike the perfect balance between having narrow frames to maximise the view and
the ability of being able to accommodate wide panel sizes without being structurally weakened. Individual door sashes can be made up 1200mm.
Thresholds
Weather rated thresholds are always advisable for a set of doors that lead from an internal space to an external one. Origin offers two types of threshold – weathered and non-weathered.
The weathered threshold can be used when a property requires a fully weather tight door. This track can be sunk into the floor to offer an almost even finish, with just an 8mm upstand. This option is perfect when the doors are going to be leading to an external environment. A non-weathered threshold option in comparison can offer a completely flat transition between the inside and out, but optimal weather performance can’ t be guaranteed.
As with any transition between home and garden, drainage is an important
factor. There are two types of drainage methods that can be used on Origin’ s external bi-folds. Face drainage ensures the water enters the lower chamber of the track and exits via a capped hole in the outer face. Concealed drainage ensures the water exits the bottom track through the polyamide and enters the top of the cill. From there, it travels through the front section of the cill and out of the very front edge underneath. How rain water and surface water is taken away from the drainage outlet is a site-specific requirement, so will need to be considered as part of the building work.
