The second push is identifying and actioning ways to bridge the skills gap more immediately by working with people who are already in the world of work but seeking a change of direction . The latter means partnerships with , among others , the Armed Forces , Ministry of Justice , Department of Work and Pensions , Support Groups and Charities .
Building Our Skills has formed a partnership with specialist armed forces recruitment agency , FrontFoot . This collaboration means that Building Our Skills is able to showcase over 50 industry career paths on the agency ’ s websites and through its networks to raise awareness of the industry amongst those looking at leaving the forces and getting back into civilian life .
By becoming a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant , Building Our Skills additionally has access to many ex and current service staff , and can share career opportunities with them . The organisation is also seeking engagement with the Ministry of Justice about its ‘ New Futures Network ’, which has been designed specifically to join the Prison Service and the world of work together to meet mutually agreed objectives to bring ex-offenders into employment , and part of addressing the
skills gap is an ongoing dialogue with the Department for Work and Pensions and the charities and support groups it works alongside that share the aim of getting people into employment .
Building Our Skills Director and Ambassador John Ogilvie commented :
“ Many of the things we are planning are tangible and measurable , and by working together as an industry we can all contribute to making it a success . The plan is underpinned
by a vast range of opportunities for those in the industry to get involved with and I would appeal to everybody to do something , however small , to contribute . I would ask everybody to read the plan and ask themselves , is there something they can do .
“ Specifically , look at our plans for the education sector and how you might be able to get involved , and also help us develop our career roles portal , even if it is only be sending us photographs of people in the various
roles , details of what the role entails , details of career progression potential , basic salary details … all these things will help us to promote the industry as the brilliant place to forge a career that we all know it is .
“ Our plan also deals with the importance of upskilling existing industry employees and of staff retention . Our various academies offer employers the opportunity to draw on the support they might need to help ensure their staff stay with their businesses and also develop new skills to offset the impact of people leaving or retiring . Bridging the skills gap should not only be about bringing in new people .”
