WHY INTEGRAL BLINDS HELP TO MAKE OUR HOMES‘ SUMMER-RESILIENT’

Ian Short, Managing Director of Uni-Blinds ® manufacturer Morley Glass, looks at the added summertime value of pleated blackout integral blinds.
AUGUST 2025 // ISSUE 149 PROINSTALLER. CO. UK FREE
Keeping our homes comfortable and functioning properly for everyday life in the height of summer can be difficult. This is not surprising when you consider that, on the Summer Solstice, cities in the south such as London and Bristol experience around 16.5 hours of daylight, rising to over 17 hours up north in Leeds. Go further north and the daylight length increases even more, with nearly 18 hours on 21st June in places like Aberdeen.
These light evenings can make it difficult to get an early night, and they can be particularly challenging for anyone with young children. Parents will know how hard it can be to convince their youngsters that it is bedtime when the daylight levels outside resemble early afternoon rather than early evening.
Even with curtains or standard blinds, it can be difficult to reduce the levels of light sufficiently, which is why ScreenLine ® pleated blackout integral blinds, available within the Uni-Blinds ® range, can be transformational. The key to their effectiveness is the high-quality fabric used for their manufacture which blocks light transmission extremely well.
In addition, as the blind does not feature cords like a Venetian blind, coupled with its precise fit to prevent gaps at each side of the IGU, there is no risk of‘ light bleed’. This is actually a key reason why the pleated blackout integral blind is also a popular
choice for homeowners when they are creating a cinema room.
Reducing heat as well as light
It is not just the pleated blackout integral blind’ s light blocking characteristics that are important in summer, however. Excessive sunlight also contributes to overheating inside our homes, and this can be mitigated by installing a pleated blackout integral blind thanks again to the properties of the fabric.
For example, the highest levels of solar reflection offered by the fabric used to manufacture our standard‘ vanity’ pleated integral blinds is 40 %. Whilst this is still a respectable reduction in light and heat transmission versus no integral blind at all, it is far lower than the 71 % solar reflection level offered by the pleated blackout version.
