GROWTH IN SELF
AND CUSTOM BUILD
A market report, billed as the largest of its kind, has
revealed that the self and custom build industry is growing
at a rate of 6.25 per cent year on year, marking its third
consecutive annual spike. At its current pace, the sector is
estimated to reach 16,500 housing completions by 2020.
According to the Self & Cus-
tom Build Market Report com-
missioned and generated by
Homebuilding & Renovating – the
UK provider of information in the
sector - this three-year forecast
implies an industry growth of 41
per cent and an average industry
value of £6 billion. This reinforc-
es the sector’s strategic role as a
contributor to the government’s
housebuilding targets, by offering
choice and quality for the wider
public.
The release of these figures
marks the most comprehen-
sive analysis of the current and
potential industry ever produced
from associated publicly-available
data. Supported by the National
Custom and Self Build Associa-
tion (NaCSBA), the report forms a
go-to reference for the market. It
offers insightful reading for policy-
makers at national and local level,
and marketers/companies either
already in the sector or looking to
expand their activity.
Jason Orme, one of its contrib-
utors, alongside Michael Holmes
and Brian Greene, says: “As a
result of the market increase and
other factors – not least the reluc-
tance of speculative housebuilders
to differ their standard offerings –
suppliers of products and servic-
es are increasingly finding the
self and custom build market an
interesting opportunity. Without
discerning information, both of
these stakeholders are likely to
miss their key goals in the years to
come. We compiled this report to
facilitate access to the heart of the
industry and contribute to them
reaching a new milestone in their
growth.”
Celebrities such as Grand De-
sign’s presenter Kevin McCloud,
George Clarke, presenter of Amaz-
ing Spaces and Charlie Luxton,
presenter of Building the Dream
are supporting NaCSBA’s Right to
Build campaign. Kevin McCloud
has said: “The crises in the qual-
ity, quantity and affordability of
British housing is one of the most
corrosive economic and social
issues of our time. Time which is
running out.”

company’s stand at The London

ech joined delegates from around
the world at China Glass, one of
the biggest dates in the global
glass industry’s calendar.
Held each year in Beijing or
Shanghai, the massive trade show
reliably draws visitors in excess of
30,000, and this year featured 800
exhibiting companies from over 30
countries.
Edgetech, trading under the
name of parent company Quanex
in China, attracted attention from
new prospects and existing cus-
tomers alike with its warm edge
offerings, including its TruPlas,
Dura, and flagship Super Spacer
products.
Of particular interest was an
eye-catching curved IGU display,
made with Super Spacer TriSeal.
Chris Alderson, managing di-
rector for the UK and Asia Pacific,
commented: “The fact this was
our seventh appearance at China
Glass speaks volumes about
how valuable the show is for our
business.
“It gives us the opportunity to
meet thousands of new prospects
from every continent on the
planet. Seeing the performance of
our best-in-class products is often
enough to persuade potential cus-
tomers to make the switch.”

Senior
appointment
strengthens
team
Cornwall Glass has announced
the appointment of Adam Shaylor as
sales manager of its newly acquired
architectural glass business.
Cornwall Glass completed the
purchase of Hayes-based mul-
ti-laminate specialist, LW Architec-
tural Glass at the end of March,
now operating as Cornwall Archi-
tectural Glass – London.
Adam who has held previous
senior sales roles within the glass
industry with Nicholls & Clarke and
Glassolutions/Saint-Gobain, culmi-
nating in a role as head of strategic
sales, said Cornwall Architectural
Glass - London, brings a unique set
of specialisms to market.
“Our business is manufactur-
ing architectural, laminated and
toughened glass. By not having
a laminate cutting table, it means
every piece of glass produced is
unique. This bespoke offer means
that we’re ideally placed to serve
the architectural glass market”, he
said.
Adam continued: “The opportu-
nity to build this specific business
type from the ground up doesn’t
come along very often.”
