It has been said that only mad dogs and Englishmen
go out in the midday sun, but it is also true that Hay
Bowlers play in the pouring rain.

The Bowling Club Pairs Championships, played early
in June, was played in miserable weather.
Intermittent sunshine, blizzard conditions and strong
winds played havoc with bowlers shots, pushing
bowls off course and slowing them down.

Play was suspended on a couple
of occasions due to heavy rain,
but contenders determined to
push on. Rex Thomas and Don
Anderson led the score board
until the 15th end, when John
Lucas and Maurie Fruend caught
up. The final six ends saw the
leadership change back and
forth, until the final end when
Rex and Don picked up the
points to win the Championship
21 -18
Don Anderson and Rex Thomas took
out the Hay Bowling Club Pairs
Championship, winning 21 - 18 over
John Lucas and Maurie Fruend.
Rex Thomas quipped, “I need to put my
hands in the ice box to warm them up”.
Spectators on the other hand enjoyed
the game in warmth inside Hay Bowling
Club.
