Botswana
CWA Country of study
2014
Hay Branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA)
held a luncheon at the Hay Services Club to celebrate
International Day. Ladies have been studying Botswana
this year and Sue Flynn, who lived and worked in
Botswana from 1994 to 2007, was invited as guest
speaker. Sue says “Botswana is very dear to me. It holds
a very special place in my heart.”
Born in the United Kingdom, Sue grew up with a love of
Enid Blyton stories which she attributes to encouraging
her adventurous nature. When a job opportunity was
offered in the African country of Botswana, she gladly
accepted and so started her love affair with the people
and her new environment. Sue shared stories of
weddings, witch doctors and Christmas parties.

After lunch of a traditional Botswanan chicken dish and
lemon meringue pie, guests were treated to insights about
Botswana that no encyclopaedia or travel brochure could
capture.
Before guests arrived CWA members from around the
district held their Group meeting. Members from those
branches stayed to enjoy lunch and catch up with Hay
members.
Next on the agenda for the CWA is the annual tea stand
at the Hay Show.

Mrs Edna Finch, Hay CWA International Officer was
instrumental in gaining much of the information on Botswana to
share with members. She enjoyed looking at project boards from
school students. Pictured with Betty Andrew.
