An evening at the Dunera Museum with David Houston was filled with history as he told stories from his memories of the Hay POW and Internment Camps. Meeting at the Railway Station for nibbles, drinks and a bit of a yarn, a small group was entertained as David recalled the arrival of Japanese prisoners to Hay, and the subsequent reactions of nervous residents. Mr. Houston, and others in the group, recalled locals arming themselves in case they were “all murdered in their beds,” and how on one night citizens were evacuated to the Council Chambers and one young lass worried as she had forgotten her make up, as well as other stories. The Dunera Museum Committee hold six such evenings each year and its a great opportunity to hear history from those who lived it. David is in the process of recording some of his stories, and the history, to eventually add to sound tracks already played in the museum. The two railway carriages at the Hay Railway Station hold a wealth of information about the POW and Internment Camps and are well worth a visit from visitors and locals. The next evening will be held on 6th September. Pictured is David Houston with the potato masher his father bought when the POW camp was dismantled and sold off.
