Citizen of the year award for Nerida Reid
Nerida Reid’s volunteering career was
inspired by her father. “You can’t be on the
outside complaining,” her father said, “ If
your not happy with the way something is
done, and think you can do better, get
involved; try to make changes from the
inside, or get an understanding of why
things are done the way they are.”
Getting involved Nerida has, over her
lifetime, volunteered on school P&C
committees, Canteens, school councils and
the Hay War Memorial High School’s Ex
Students Association, Hospital Auxillary,
Landcare, HACC, Meals on Wheels,
Bishop’s Lodge Committee, CASE, Hay
Services Club Ladies Bowls Club, Rural
Fire Service, CWA, Hay Show Society and
more.
Nerida has always had the support of her
husband, Neville, and her children; one of
whom swore they would never become
involved in committees, and yet have
followed mum’s lead to become volunteers
within their communities.
Although she has given much of herself to
various committees and organisations,
Nerida feels she has gained on a personal
level along the way, organisational skills
and self confidence topping the list of
positives gained from volunteering, as well
as skills and friendships.
In 2013 Nerida was awarded the Riverina Volunteers Award. On
Australia Day 2014, Nerida became Hay’s Citizen of the Year, a tribute
to her service to the community.
