Proud and Deadly Awards Students from Hay travelled to Deniliquin in November for the presentation of the ‘Proud and Deadly Awards’. The awards acknowledge and encourage education achievement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Bushy Bend was the scene for the recent launch of a DVD which highlights the importance of education, especially within the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander community. Local community members tell their stories of what it means to get an education, and the barriers of the past which prevented students obtaining schooling. Ray Woods welcomed everyone, in the tradition language, and thanked those who participated in the production of the DVD. This project has been financially supported by the Australian Government’s Parent and Community Engagement (PaCE) program, and developed locally by the Intereach ~ Community Development Unit The project was made possible with the assistance of Hay Historical Society, Hay Shire Council, And all Hay Schools. An audience of around 60 people enjoyed a BBQ tea before the screening, which took place on the bridge pylons.
