Hay Gaol proves popular with kids Small schools from Conargo, Blighty and Mayrung combined for a school excursion to Hay in October. Visiting Shear Outback first then lunch in the park, the teachers and students finished their day with a trip to the Hay Gaol. The children were fascinated by some of the “old stuff” displayed in the cells and asked many questions. John Matthews, tour guide for the day, answered the kids and gave explanation on many of the items. To one little girls question, at the ‘escape cell’, “Where is he?” John gave a lovely simple explanation, “The man ‘Close the gates’ the children asked, and John Matthews took the time to comply, much to the delight of the teachers, who hoped the bus driver was on the outside with them, a bit of light hearted fun. is older than your grandfather and not here anymore’, which satisfied the child. Nicely done. outside and the kids were eager to explore those, including the entry gates. Although most exhibits at the museum are behind bars, the are a number of items that can be touched It should be noted that teachers stayed on the outside and the children enjoyed the experience of being ‘locked in’.
