Jack Treblanche, map and marking paint in hand, walked the track with riders, discussing and marking out changes to the BMX bike track. “People power,” says Jack, “City park (in Griffith) came about due to kid power.” Kid Power At the July Council meeting a petition of 128 signatures was presented to Council with regard to the state of the BMX bike track. In his presentation speech, Kenny Hargreaves informed those present that the track was in poor condition and upgrades were needed. soon the BMX bike track “will be a park to suit all ages.” In August/September weeds around the track were cleaned up and Jack Treblanche, Director of Community Development, held a consultation morning with riders, and parents. Discussion on jump numbers and heights as well as ‘bowls’ were discussed as well as seating, tables and safety barriers. Kids jumped on their bikes and rode the newly cleaned course before enjoying a bbq lunch at the track. Jack informed those present that Council has approved a contractor to come in and start the form work and Where possible, surplus materials will be recycled for the barriers and seating. It was also suggested that a sand pit could be built, and that suggestion is under consideration. Rayleen Poole and Robbie Biggs were at the meeting giving advise on how the track ‘used to be’. Robbie remembered the old days when kids would go to the track with shovels and make their own jumps.
